Try to emphasize the objects and surfaces that are most touched : tables, door handles, switches, telephones, faucets, sinks, etc.

The cleaning order lightens the housework. Although, this year the order of cleaning will be governed by other aspects, such as cleaning first what is most touched. This is done, especially, for meetings with family and friends. It is a precautionary measure against covid-19.

How to clean and disinfect the house before and after Christmas

1. Cutlery and crockery

Before Christmas

In most homes it is time to take out the “good crockery and silverware” that is stored for special dates. If this is the case, you should wash the crockery and silverware before use.

After Christmas

This year, the first and most important thing to clean and disinfect after lunch or dinner is the dishes and cutlery . Above all, if you have spent the holidays with your relatives who are not living together or with those close to you.

We recommend that, as soon as you finish lunch or dinner, you put all the utensils used directly into the dishwasher, whose washing program has a temperature higher than 60ºC . If you don’t have a dishwasher, sink it with hot water, soap, and white vinegar .

2. Bathroom

Before Christmas

Did you know that you can clean the bathroom in 10 minutes ? Have the bathroom ready for your guests. Collect all the accessories (dryer, hair straighteners, shampoos, creams, toothpaste or others) and store them in their respective drawers. Shake out your mat and disinfect the floor with the help of a mop. And finally, don’t forget to clean the mirrors and glass .

After Christmas

The second most important thing after Christmas lunches and dinners is cleaning and disinfecting the bathroom. Don’t forget to clean the door handles or doorknobs.

The bathroom is preferable that you disinfect it with bleach , as indicated in the article, recommendations to minimize the risk of contagion in meetings with family and friends .

3. Christmas decoration

Before Christmas

Both the Christmas tree and its decorations are stored for months in places prone to humidity, dust and mites. Therefore, we recommend that you clean the Christmas tree and its decorations to avoid the dreaded Christmas allergies. You can do it with a cloth, water and vinegar or soap .

After Christmas

Before storing your Christmas decorations, clean them up! This will keep them in good condition. Take advantage of this cleaning to recycle what has been broken or is very old.

  • Tip : You can mix ¼ cup of vinegar with hot water in a spray bottle and use this solution to clean and disinfect both your Christmas tree and Christmas decorations.

4. The fridge is also cleaned

Before Christmas

The refrigerator should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a month . On these dates, the fridge tends to fill with different products such as meat, fish, seafood, vegetables, sweets, etc. We recommend that you separate meats from vegetables and other foods well to avoid cross contamination .

After Christmas

Try to pay attention to any food that may be left over. It is very important that you store them in airtight tapers as soon as possible. Why? Because food cooked at room temperature generates Clostridium perfriens , a common bacteria in food poisoning .

Therefore, it is highly recommended to refrigerate leftovers as soon as possible. When it is time to use them again, reheat them to at least 75ºC before serving .

5. Soils

We recommend that you clean the floors frequently, if possible, daily. The best thing for tile floors is to use soap and cold water . Afterwards, you can disinfect it with bleach, as recommended by the Ministry of Health.

If it is parquet or wooden floors, you can apply a commercial formula or a solution of warm water and white vinegar . Vinegar is an excellent product to clean and disinfect in a natural and ecological way.

For soft surfaces like carpeted floors, rugs, and curtains, clean the surfaces with soap and water.

6. The importance of ventilating

While you are cleaning, let your house breathe , that is, open doors and windows so that all rooms are ventilated (at least for about 30 minutes). If you turn this practice into a habit, you favor the renewal of air in your home and avoid the appearance of humidity .

Also, we recommend shaking curtains, bedding, and rugs.

7. Waste

Set aside a dedicated garbage bag for those days and remove them as soon as you have finished cleaning. It is advisable to use gloves to throw the garbage After disposing of the residue, remove your gloves and wash your hands with soap and water.

Remember, masks and gloves should be thrown into the gray container for proper recycling.
