One of the places we spend the most time is in bed. Therefore, we cannot imagine the amount of mites, bacteria and dust that accumulates in it . Do you know the correct way to clean mattresses and bedding?
Myths about mattresses
The reality is that it is essential for health and adequate rest. However, as with so many topics, everyone has an opinion, a belief and an experience. We present this article to dispel the most commented myths about the cleanliness of the mattress and its clothes. Keep reading to know them!
1. If you have a protector, you don’t need to clean the mattress
Quite the contrary of what most believe, mattress covers or covers do not serve to prevent the appearance of dust mites and other microorganisms that cause allergies. In fact, according to the National Pest Management Association of the United States, mattresses can contain up to 2 million mites that are capable of doubling in weight after 10 years.
The protectors only work to filter some spills (being waterproof), but they are not magic. So it is advisable to clean the mattress twice a year. A good trick is to guide you through the change of season.
2. The mattress toppers are not washed
Although it is true that these products do not need to be washed as continuously, as the rest of the bedding, the mattress toppers do need to be cleaned. Ideally, do it every six months, at the same time as the mattress, or even every four months.
3. The bed should be tidy as soon as you wake up
The rule of order here does not count, since the mites are more active in heat. After eight hours of rest, the mattress will be warmer than ever.
You’ll ruffle them if you straighten the sheets right away. Let them cool for at least half an hour. When you order, open the window to refresh the bedroom.
4. The pillows are not cleaned
Dirt, sweat, saliva, dust and much more. The pillows are recipients of all this.
They are the bed accessories that we always touch and, for this reason, they require cleaning every quarter . After several washes, it is best to replace them with new ones.
5. Clean your bedding at 30 degrees Celsius
You may not know how important temperature is when washing your bedding. But the most favorable thing is to carry out this task in the washing machine with a cycle of 60 degrees Celsius, since it is the guarantee that the germs will disappear.
6. The pajamas are only used once
The hygiene of your sleepwear depends on many factors. For example, if the weather you sleep in is very warm and you sweat in the middle of the night, you can’t wear your pajamas more than once.
Meanwhile, if you used it freshly bathed, in a cold room, it is possible to use it twice, but always taking it off when you get up. Anyway, if it looks dirty or smells bad, put it in the washing machine!
7. You can sleep only with underwear
The truth is that going to bed with underwear, without pajamas, there is nothing wrong, as long as it is clean. The problem occurs when this garment is contaminated with bacteria that come from the genitals.
In this way, germs will spread more easily throughout the bed, which will eventually lead to health problems that no one wants to have.
8. All covers are changed at the same time
No. The pillowcases and duvet covers (used as blankets or duvets) are two elements with different uses and, consequently, with a cleaning variant.
On the one hand, the blanket is washed every week or every 15 days. On the other hand, as the pillow is a direct receptor of sweat and creams, the covers should be cleaned every 3 or 4 days.
Tips for cleaning mattresses
Proper cleaning of mattresses will be reflected in our quality of life, as it represents health and daily rest. Also, one of the benefits is that its lifespan will be much longer. Follow these tips.
Ventilate your room every day
When was the last time you opened your window? Whether you remember it or not, it is time to do it daily, for at least five minutes, preferably between 7 and 10 in the morning . Ventilating the bedroom is key in the cleaning routine.
Stain the mattress
It is inevitable that mattresses get stained because there are a lot of liquids and fluids that, even if there is a protector, can reach that surface. Favorite products include baking soda or paste, lemon, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and cold milk.
For each stain there will be a specific procedure that we explain here. The best in each dirt is the following:
- Sweat stains: lemon with water, white vinegar (mixing one part vinegar and four parts water) or a combination of three tablespoons of ammonia, one liter of water and three tablespoons of liquid soap are special for these traces.
- Vomit and urine stains: it is great to spray lemon with water, because in addition to removing stains, the fruit has an antiseptic property. Another option, especially if the stain is dry, is to sprinkle baking soda , cover with a plastic material, let it rest and vacuum.
- Bloodstains: the hydrogen peroxide is ideal for removal. You just have to apply a little, wait for the bubbles, and remove with white clothes.
- Moisture stains: whether caused by sweat or spilled water, moisture is another cause of stains. First, dry the mattress in full sun or with a hair dryer, add a small portion of solvent, rinse with lukewarm water, and finish by spraying on a touch of disinfectant.
Do deep mattress cleaning every six months
Take advantage of the change of season to clean up . To get rid of unpleasant odors , sprinkle some baking soda, put on a cloth or sheet, and let it do its thing for a couple of hours or a day.
Avoid wetting your mattress to clean it , it should not be soaked! This damages the upholstery and causes mold, fungus and bacteria to grow. Discard steam cleaners from your list.
It is also contraindicated to hit it to shake off the dust. Always opt for the special vacuum for bed and upholstery. Vacuum, apply with a disinfectant spray or hydrogen peroxide, rub hard, let it dry and that’s it.
Tips for cleaning bedding
Bedding also requires special care . Just as we brought you tips for cleaning mattresses, now we will see some to complete the task with sheets and blankets.
Take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations
Each fabric has its characteristics and this makes the washing and drying processes one way or another . Maintenance varies, but the end will always be the same.
Reading the label carefully, you will realize that, sometimes, it is only allowed to wash by hand, with a maximum temperature.
Roast it every week
This is the ideal time, but you can use several tricks to prolong the cleaning. First of all, avoid that your pets get on the bed, do not eat in it and apply the body lotions a while before going to bed, so that they do not get stuck on all sides.
Remove stains before washing sheets and blankets
Before washing, check the clothes very well to verify that there are no stains . If you find them, use any of the products we discussed above for mattress cleaning. The effect will be the same.
Separate the garments
We all want to finish the housework quickly, but in that eagerness we tend to gather the bedding with rags, pajamas and whatever we have on the way, which is an absolute mistake. You must separate the garments according to the material, use and color.
Don’t overload the washing machine. Pour in the soap first and, finally, put the clothes in. Work with the indicated wash cycle and at a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius (especially if the fabric is cotton).
A useful tip is to apply detergent to provide more softness . However, be careful with the quantity! An overdose can leave residue, harshness or very strong odors.

Finally, that your mattress is not so old
For your chores to be successful, there are still several things you need to know. First, the mattress should not be more than 10 years old, otherwise it becomes a pollutant source that will threaten your health with allergies, infections, skin conditions or respiratory conditions.
Don’t limit yourself to cleaning mattresses and your clothes. Includes everything related to bed. Keep in mind that you spend a third of your day in that space.
